Shelby County Jail Mugshots
Shelby County's official adult inmate roster displays booking photographs. The roster instruction line says to click the inmate name to view an inmate picture, and the inspected public rows showed a photo thumbnail beside listed records. Clicking the name or image opened an image-view page that displayed a larger booking image. That image view did not add a full text profile in the inspected sample. It functioned as a larger photo display tied back to the roster row.
The booking photo belongs in context. The same public roster row can show the inmate number, name, booking date, charge description, bond type or code, bond amount, and total bond. The roster does not show the final court disposition, and a booking charge can change after the District Attorney or court acts. The Shelby County inmate records page is better for the general roster search, while court charges and expungement filings belong with the Circuit Clerk and court record channels.

Shelby County Mugshot Law
Alabama source material did not locate one special statewide mugshot statute that controls every county booking image apart from the general public-record system. The relevant public basis is the combination of Alabama's public-records law and the sheriff prisoner-record law. Shelby County's monthly intake and release reports cite the sheriff prisoner-record law and reproduce public prisoner fields. That is strong local evidence that jail intake and release data is handled as a public sheriff record when no exception applies.

Alabama Code Section 36-12-40 gives Alabama residents a general right to inspect and copy public records unless a legal exception applies.
Alabama Code Section 36-22-8 requires sheriffs to keep a public prisoner record book with key facts about people received into county jail.
Alabama Code Section 12-15-133 makes juvenile court records and information concerning children confidential except as law allows.
Other limits can still apply. Law-enforcement investigative material has separate rules. Active investigations, security information, victim-identifying information, sealed court records, Youthful Offender records, and juvenile records can be withheld or redacted. That is why a public adult roster photo may be available while another photo or record is not.
Shelby County Mugshot Retention
No official Shelby County source located during research gave a precise photo-retention rule for the public roster. The supported statement is narrower: booking photos are visible through the public roster while the person appears in a relevant roster view, and the roster has a Release in the Last Thirty Days tab. That tab supports a short-term release lookup, but it does not prove that every photo remains visible for exactly thirty days or that older photos stay online.
What is and is not public: Adult roster photos can appear with current, recent-arrival, or recent-release records. Juvenile, sealed, Youthful Offender, active investigative, security-sensitive, and some victim-related records may be unavailable or redacted.
The official intake and release report archive is useful for older monthly movement records, but the inspected reports did not operate as photo galleries. They show public prisoner intake and release fields such as book ID, intake and release details, release code, sex/race/age, distinguishing marks, and charges. A person looking for an older booking photo should use the sheriff records route rather than assuming the monthly archive includes images.
Request Shelby County Booking Photos
If a Shelby County booking photo is not visible online, the request path depends on the custodian and the type of record. For sheriff-held jail records, the Sheriff's Records Unit is the local contact. The research lists the Records Unit phone as 205-669-3854, the Jail Division phone as 205-670-6066, and the Sheriff's Office main number as 205-670-6000. For county government records not controlled by the sheriff, Shelby County's public-records request page describes online, mail, and in-person request options, possible deposits, exemptions, and a normal response window.
A good request should identify the person by full name, known alias if any, approximate booking date, and the specific record sought. If the request is for a booking photo from an active case, a sealed case, a juvenile matter, or a record with safety or victim concerns, the office may deny, limit, or redact access. Shelby County Mugshot Removal
Shelby County did not publish a separate official mugshot-removal policy in the reviewed sources. For official government records, the documented route is the court record-clearing process when Alabama law allows it. Shelby Circuit Clerk's expungement page says the required petition is form CR-65, one offense per petition must be filed, multi-count cases require multiple petitions and fees, and the administrative filing fee is $500 per filing. The page also says an indigent petitioner may be placed on a payment plan that must be paid before an order granting expungement.

The expungement route deals with qualifying official records, but it does not guarantee that every third-party copy disappears at the same time.
Expungement requires supporting records. The Shelby instructions say the petitioner must attach an official certified criminal record from ALEA/ACJIC and certified records of arrest, disposition, or case action summary from the appropriate agency. Commercial Mugshot Site Limits

State and Federal Photos
State and federal custody systems do not work the same way as the Shelby County jail roster. ADOC handles sentenced Alabama state prisoners, and the ADOC inmate search is the lookup channel after transfer to state custody. ADOC search fields include AIS number, first name, and last name. The county roster should not be expected to track a sentenced person after transfer to ADOC unless the person is again physically booked into Shelby County Jail.
Federal custody is different again. The BOP inmate locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward, but it does not publish routine federal mugshots like a county roster photo field.
